The simple name change from “Gotham Tech Labs” to “Starburst Labs” reflects our expansion to and hiring in Providence and places beyond our NYC headquarters.

Summary Points:

  • We changed our corporate name from Gotham Tech Labs, Inc. to Starburst Labs, Inc. And we launched a new website at www.StarburstLabs.com
  • Why the change? With connotations of New York City in “Gotham,” it was a little off-putting to new hires in Providence and the Greater Boston area (aka: Red Sox Nation) as we staff up an engineering team there!
  • Starburst Labs remains headquartered in NYC and continues on with the development of our integrated #fintech brands of InvestorSay, PaperTrade.io, Wealthbase, and Wealthbox CRM.

A Simple Name Change

Today we’re announcing a corporate name change, from “Gotham Tech Labs, Inc.” to “Starburst Labs, Inc.” We remain a Delaware corporation with a front office, so to speak, in New York City and plans to build up our engineering and customer support teams in Providence over the next few years.

Admittedly we’re going from connotations of comics in “Gotham” to candy in “Starburst” but the reality is we promote ourselves through each of our brands — Wealthbox, Wealthbase, InvestorSay and PaperTrade.io.

Why We Changed Our Name? …Hiring Reasons.

Given that New York City is an iconic financial center of the world, we thought it made originally sense to have a corporate name that suggested to customers, partners, and investors that we were part of the fintech scene here in NYC. And we remain so.

However, we’ve branched out to new locations. For instance, we have customer care personnel working on the Wealthbox CRM help desk in Ohio. And recently we’re looking for new office space in Providence to build over time a team of engineers who reside in the Providence and the Greater Boston areas, managed by Starburst Labs’ co-founder Dan Ferranti.

Amusingly, we quickly found that when recruiting outside of New York City, it was a little off-kilter for potential new hires in Providence and Greater Boston area to envision themselves working for a “Gotham” Tech Labs. The geographical connotation of NYC was a bit much, particularly in Red Sox Nation. 😳

So there you have it. We changed our corporate name from Gotham Tech Labs to Starburst Labs to appeal to new hires outside of New York City.

“Starburst” …What’s In A Name?

We wanted to keep the “Labs” descriptor in the new name. We formed our company to build a suite of standalone yet complementary and integrated apps in the fintech space. “Labs” as a word suggests ideas and creation, experimentation and technical development.

There is some intentional meaning in the “Starburst” word. Longer term, as we mature each of these separate and standalone products and birth new ones, we may spin out and recapitalize certain properties as conditions warrant, resulting in a sort of “corporate starburst” in our quasi- “studio model” of building fintech ventures here at Starburst Labs.
